If you see this grain hopper on the road, what's wrong?
All trailers, dollies and trucks-built after March 1, 1998, require ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) plus a malfunctioning light is located on the driver’s side rear of the trailer. If specing tractors with the center pin on the 7-way powered constantly (OEM option), that is a violation in at least Texas and probably other states. Tractors were ABS mandated March 1,1997.
In Texas, a trailer ABS light test involves verifying that this light cycles on/off when the circuit is first powered to stay off during normal operation. If the light fails to cycle on/off, blinks, or stays on, it indicates an ABS malfunction.
There are two separate ABS systems, tractor, and trailer, however the trailer is powered by the 7 (center pin) J560 black plug base. The second 7-way is ISO 3731 yellow and is used for trailer options.
With power supplied to the trailer, that lamp momentarily turns on indicating the system is working and doing a self-check. If malfunctioning, the lamp stays on; otherwise, the lamp turns off after a few seconds or may require 5 MPH (old systems). If the lamp does not come on, it probably means no power, so check the 7-way.
The tractor has two ABS lamps tractor/trailer on the dash. Trucks have one. There is no exterior light to indicate if the ABS is functioning.
