What are the chances you can run 75 MPH tires with a 20K rating?

If you are not bound by a state tire patch derate, you may look at 315mm tires as an alternative to 425mm. Both tire sizes are often speed rated below 75 MPH.

As tread thickness increases tires build heat, as does speed. To combat the issue, you can limit speed to 68 mph maximum or reduce the tread depth from 25/32” to something around 19/32”. Less tread equals shorter life. If you opt for running faster, shallower tread on the 315/80R22.5 you also may be capped at 9,090 lbs./wheel end, resulting in steer axle GAWR of 18,180 lbs. on the door label. Be certain all the trade-offs are going to work in your application.

…..stay tuned next week for some tips on Steer Axle Wheel Application.

Z-factor Consultation is hosting class in Dallas Texas, May 5-6. I can send an invite. Anyone interested in learning more about trucks is welcome, it’s not OEM-specific. For maximum benefit you must bring experiences, questions, etc. If new to the business, we’d recommend eLearning at Zfactorconnect.com so that you’re not overwhelmed. We have 23 seats left, first-come/first-served.

You can also access our latest program, GURU,

on your phone. Just use the QR code previously distributed for 5-day trial access or let me know if you'd like one.

The program generates a 15-page application (view) specific chassis report that can be transmitted to a Customer, a Dealership, or used as training. Salesperson-Customer collaboration drastically cuts down on the time lost due to misunderstanding, and improves conversion through buy-in.
