Heavy Haul 5th Wheel Considerations

Updated: Aug 16, 2020

Most heavy haul tractors will have a long 5th wheel slide. The driver needs to move the pin forward to load that front axle to the desired ground weight.

Typically, this occurs at least 48 inches ahead of bogie, with GCWRs over 120,000 lbs. Additionally, the slide needs to extend behind bogie to facilitate the ramp to 5th wheel transfer. Ramps allow the tractor to back up to the trailer and guide the kingpin into place.

To accomplish this the 5th wheel needs to be positioned at a negative (behind bogie) setting, so the trailer transfers somewhat seamlessly from the ramps to the wheel.  Holland does not sell additional 5th wheel angles and track in 12 inch increments any longer. If you get this wrong, you may be forced into a different 5th wheel or massive rework that is not covered by the OE.

Make sure you ask the customer if they will build custom trailer ramps. If so, order the square End-Of-Frame (EOF) without crossmember, since the EOF will be modified by the customer. Do not spend money on products that the up-fitter will trash. And now.....
